Now that Moff's
final season is over, I think its high time to write about what
Chibnall should do as show runner. But before I begin I think there
needs to be a clear understanding of what Doctor who is. Doctor Who
is a family scifi anthology series where we see the doctors many
different adventures through space and time. With that, lets begin.
MULTI
PART STORIES
in the classic
series they had multi part stories, classic fans obviously want
something similar with the new show but season nine prove that the
writers have no idea how to do a two or three parter. for the record
I'm all for two or three part stories but forty five minutes
isn't the main problem here. What is? The writing. Speaking of which...
SHOWRUNNER
The
number one problem with the use of a show runner is that one person
writes half a season. So two things I suggest, first let the show
runner write a single story for the middle of the season. Second stop
using the shopping list technique just let writers write if its good
make an episode if not don't. Speaking of which.
CHANGE
THE WRITING STAFF
If you can get promising writers from shows like
Black Mirror or establish writers from Doctor Who's Big Finish audios, comics,
or novels; do it. Even if you have to get up and coming writers that
know how to write; do it. please stop using the same mediocre writers
that have been here for the last ten seasons, I'm looking at you Mark
Gatiss and Toby Whithouse.
WHAT
NOT TO DO
no previous elements/continuity from previous eras of the show, no earth or
our solar system, no present day young attractive female human
companion, no comedic sidekicks, no season arcs, no absurd plot
twists, no melodramas, no elements that exclude science fiction, no
shaky cam, no sonic screwdriver, no fairy tales, no one lives forever, and no conventional
story formulas.
WHAT TO DO
Do write original scifi stories that are unconventional and
do use the Tardis and the doctor. Essentially the only elements that should be
present next season.
FORMAT
IF I could change the format of the show this is what
I would do. the structure would have three multi part stories along
with single episodes in between but
the stories of said season would all be in space at different times
and locales. They be many differing cultures and species and none of
them would look similar to each other or to our earth. So it makes sense that our companion is an alien tribal warrior
that's doesn't look like this
None of the stories will be similar to each other for it would work like Jon Pertwee's seventh season but grounded in far out space than present day earth.
IN
CONCLUSION
If all else fails and you're stories either suck or are
mediocre scrap em and adapt. There's a multitude of brilliant big
finish audios, novels, and comics to chose from. there is no reason
to make this show lame. I mean you can go anywhere in space and time.
p.s. Only stay as show runner for three to four seasons at most and if you have to have a romantic subplot don't let it be with the doctor instead have it between two companions for example have a woman from the dark ages fall in love with an alien that doesn't look human from a far flung future. Also get rid of Murray Gold as composer and hire the composers from Big Finish.
