Haggard Faces Part 118

part 117 is here: https://randomblog1w.blogspot.com/2026/04/haggard-faces-part-117.html “They should be some space suits right by the hanger doors, you can use those.” “That’s great, but uh what’s a space suit?” The one who seems to sneer groans. “Look just ask the others for help.” The robot storms off. “I’m busy!” “Gotcha,” Aldan turns to the one who grits his teeth, but he’s so glue to the ships monitors that Aldan’s practically invisible to him. “Guess I’ll just find someone else to help me out then.”

Just send me a manifest of what we need.” “I'm on it.” “Hey,” Aldan buts in. “Can I come with?” “Sure why not, we need all the hands we can get.”

The Best Essay I Ever Wrote In A U.S. Public School Was Mark As An F

Yes, as the title suggests its true, the best essay I ever wrote in a U.S. public school was mark as an F. It was during my senior year of high school over a decade ago. Unfortunately I lost the paper itself so I don’t remember exactly what I wrote. But I remember it was on the topic of how to write essays and I know exactly why I failed. We were given a set page length and paragraph length to follow. And I deliberately disobey those rules. But there was a method to my madness. The point of my essay was that we don’t need to follow arbitrary rules to write an essay. You can even write a whole paragraph with just one sentence in your essay, as long as you get your points across. But of course the reason my essay was good at least for me was because it was the first time I truly expressed myself in letters despite going through years of “Language Art Classes” where I usually just regurgitated what others had said about topics I didn’t give a damn about. For in school expressing yourself doesn’t matter nearly as much as obeying the arbitrary rules, for their far more important than being literate. Back in my day when we wrote essays in public school. They were riddled with instructions as if essays are like basic arithmetic. They’re almost always about political topics even in elementary school. And to fill in the word count and page length quotas we had to pad out our texts with countless useless word. For ex. Therefore, the artichoke family can be described in fairly simple terms of a type of vegetable that can be garner with relative ease in the... You get the idea. This confused me as child for I would get into reading a lot of great books growing up Narnia, Lord of the Rings, Series of Unfortunate Events, Half Magic, Pendragon, Magic Tree House etc. But what I read as a kid, never align with what I was forced to write out in my classes and for the life of me, I couldn’t figure out why. By the time I got into high school I wanted to take a creative writing class. But the credits for the writing class was so low that I couldn’t take it until I finally got into community college. And it was in the creative writing classes I took in college that I realized I had to learn how to write all over again. Because nearly everything we’re taught in public school is wrong. For starters the only way to teach the English language is through phonics which of course very few public schools teach. Most schools have taught either sight reading or the three cues. So to summarize in phonics you learn reading by sounding out the words for ex. eng’lish, pan’el, plur’al. Etc. Sight reading is giving students whole words and just instructing them to memorize it. And the three cues is a guessing game where you see what pictures might match up to certain words and sentences. But you notice how phonics is the only one that actually teaches kids how to fucking read. No wonder we have growing illiteracy rates. And if that isn’t bad enough by the time students finally have a chance to write anything in class. It’s just some lousy essays or countless tedious book reports. For a class about Language Arts there’s hardly any art in it. Speaking of which most people rightly so have been complaining about the illiteracy rates today while generally ignoring the fact this has been a growing issue going down through multiple generations of public education. That’s why I’m writing this essay to show what’s happening now is nothing new. Why Johnny Can’t Read by Rudolf Flesch publish in 1955 and The Deliberate Dumbing Down of America by Charlotte T. Iserbyt publish in 1999 already cover this to no avail. And only now is there some sensible distrust in public education. I suspect it’s because of how fast the acceleration of the dumbing down has gotten in recent years. Due to a number of contributing factors including and not limiting to neglectful parents, iPad kids, awful school curriculums, and of course the rise of the machines aka social media and AI. So to understand how we got here. We need to know how neglectful parenting became a social norm. The root cause of this comes down to two things. Woman entering the work force and the rise of divorce court, family court, child services and social services. Now one of the consequences of woman entering the workforce was that both parents had less time to spend with their children. This led to the rise of latchkey kids or a more proper term for them should be called TV Heads. For these kids more often than not were raise on TV just as their own kids are now raise on iPads. Which I suspect is one of the main reasons why parents see no issues with having iPad kids. Now combine that with the rise in divorces. Often contributed by woman gaining more cash through the divorce court. Leading to a rise in single parent households. Leading to a rise in government programs built to support single parent households. Leading to lazy parents who expect the state to raise their kids. Leading to these same said parents expecting public school teachers to raise their children because that’s what government employees are for after all. Is it any wonder why child neglect is so common now. When kids are just viewed as a commodity to milk for profit instead of being treated as a fully blooded human beings!!! All of this has laid the groundwork for the iPad kids. But what makes it worse is that the public schools support it. For billions are wasted in putting these iPads into the classrooms. Which of course lead kids just wanting to play their games, use social media, or watch their TikTok’s Shorts etc. Causing them to not learn anything. Not like there was much to learn in these public schools in the first place but still its adding kerosene to the fire. And that’s not to mention the fact that there’s little to no discipline in these schools now a days. Because the admin refuses to punish the kids in anyway shape or form even when they’re acting up. They even refuse to hold back failing students. And the teachers get the blunt of the blame from both admin and the parents. So what good is there in public schools when the children are running the asylum. But what makes it even worse is that the kids think they know it all, because they have AI to do all the work for them. Which is raising a whole generation of complacency and it’s also teaching kids to have complete faith in the machines. And what’s the school’s solution to fix this problem. Dumbing down the curriculum even more to make it easier for kids to pass their classes, which is setting these kids up for failure in life. So how do we truly fix all of this. Well for starters we need to accept the fact that the internet, AI, and social media is an addiction. That handing an iPad to a kid is no different than letting a kid take crack. And the parents who do this should be punish and shamed for child neglect. As for the schools they need to go back to paper and pencil and cut out the iPad entirely. they also need to properly punish kids for misbehaving, hold them back a year if they must. Hell have a separate class for all the misbehave kids, so that the kids behaving can have a proper education. Anything would be better than leaving things the way there are. As to fix the school curriculum we’ll have to go back to older school textbooks printed as far back as the 1800s. No, I’m not kidding ironically these older textbooks would be easier to teach than the modern shit that’s sold to us, let me give you an ex. Here’s a link to Rays New Practical Arithmetic Ray’s New Practical Arithmetic: A Rev. Ed. of the Practical Arithmetic - Joseph Ray - Google Books now go and compare that to your modern math textbooks. You can clearly see the difference So with all this in mind and considering my bias when it comes to a love of literature, how would I go about teaching language arts? Well after teaching the basics with phonics and grammar and all that good stuff in the ole text books. I would teach the reading and writing of different formats. Starting with poetry. None of that modern stuff mind you just classic poetry like sonnets. And why would I teach the reading and writing of poetry to students. Well for starters poems aren’t that daunting. They’re only a few lines to a single page in most cases. And secondly in poetry you learn about the biggest fundamental in all of writing, editing. After all, to write a good poem requires condensing an idea to only the bare essentials while using just a few lines of verse. After that I’d teach them to read and write flash fiction, short stories, creative essays, novellas, and finally novels. There is no reason for a senior in high school to have not finish at least two drafts of their novel by the end of their school year. It may be a high bar to raise but it’s the sort of thing kids should be taught to strive for, instead of constantly lowering the bar for them. And in that way kids will be better prepared for the real world, and they’ll have the proper critical thinking skills they so desperately need. And so in conclusion don’t give kids iPads, properly discipline your kids, get your kids out of public schools as fast as you can, and look for alternatives in education. Primarily home schooling or perhaps a good private school. But remember private schools can be fifty fifty between good or bad depending on the school itself. So choose wisely. Now I know I’m being idealistic as some parents don’t really have the means to change schools. But if that’s the case. At the very least look over your student’s curriculum check their homework. Correct false teachings wherever you can. Actually talk to the teachers and school boards if somethings off. And please be civil, remember don’t be an asshole unless someone’s being a real asshole to you first. And in all things be due diligent with raising your children. They deserve that much at the very least.
